Performed by University Lyric Opera Ensemble and Utah Philharmonia

Based on Voltaire’s biting social satire, Bernstein’s comic operetta Candide tells the story of Candide’s search for the meaning of life through a series of increasingly unbelievable disasters. A continent-spanning romp, Candide’s soaring arias and witty tune-filled score will delight fans of both opera and Broadway. In celebration of the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernstein.

Language:  The characters of this show seem somewhat like “caricatures”.  There are priests, inquisitors, a Jew, and even an old lady with one buttock.  Since Candide is indeed a “bastard”, we hear the word used several times but the language used implies what it does with words that would not offend most of our audience.

Smoking/Drinking/Drug Use:  One scene with simulated cigarette and once scene with simulated wine drinking.

Sex: None, but there are “make out” scenes that are inferred and a scene of implied sex, fully clothed, and kind of silly too.

Violence: There are plenty of references to violence but all inferred and carried out with toys.

For Which Audiences? The operetta’s themes may be discomfiting to conservative audience members and may make the show unsuitable for younger children. It will be of great interest to teenaged audiences, and adult audiences who can overlook the satirical comedy which makes fun of nearly every institution that imposed hegemony at Voltaire’s time.  Some of these institutions still exist and some audience members will be able to see parallels to current times. The show is probably not appropriate for children under the age of ten; children ten and over should attend at a parent’s discretion.

Rating: If released as a movie in the United States, the show would most likely be assigned a PG-13 rating due to its themes and storytelling.
